The Nigerian Navy (NN) is celebrating its 68th anniversary in style, with a series of impressive achievements to showcase. Rear Admiral Joseph Daniel Akpan, Chief of Policy and Plans, Naval Headquarters, Abuja, highlighted the Navy’s accomplishments during a press conference.
Speaking on the theme, “Total Spectrum Maritime Strategy,” the Chief of Policy and Plans noted that, the NN has made significant strides in the fight against crude oil theft, with the successful operation of OPERATION DELTA SANITY. This major feat, he noted, has led to an increase in oil production and exports, with Nigeria now ranking the number one crude oil exporter in Africa, according to OPEC figures.
Rear Admiral Akpan explained that the Navy has also demonstrated its commitment to maritime security, with the establishment of a composite operations base in Enugu State and the relocation of the Naval Training Command to Eleme in Rivers State.
It has also taken delivery of various platforms, including offshore survey vessels, fast patrol boats, and helicopters.
He added that the Chief the Nava Staff, Vice Admiral EI Ogalla, has also achieved significant milestones in fleet renewal and infrastructure development.
On foreign engagement of its personnel, Rear Admiral Akpan said the NN has showcased its international cooperation, with participation in exercises and operations with other maritime security agencies and foreign partners.
He averred that the 68th anniversary celebrations are expected to commence on May 24 to June 1, 2024 in Lagos, which will showcase the Navy’s operational readiness, international cooperation and commitment to Maritime security.
The event will also feature a range of activities, including a Regional Maritime Exercise, an International Maritime Conference, and a ceremonial sunset/reunion dinner.
The President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is expected to be the Special Guest of Honour during the event.
The celebrations feature various activities including, special Juma’at prayers and Interdenominational church service, medical rhapsodies and Naval Officers’ Wives Association (NOWA) events, regional Maritime Exercise (REMEX) and International Maritime Conference (IMC).
The event will also feature the commissioning of new ships and helicopters, the international Maritime Exhibition, and the meeting of the Gulf of Guinea Heads of Navies and Coast Guards.
Rear Admiral Akpan expressed gratitude for media support and encouraged extensive coverage, showcasing the Navy’s achievements and contributions to national security and economic growth.
Enugu Reporters reports that these achievements by the Navy are a testament to its commitment to protecting Nigeria’s territorial waters and promoting maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea.
