Panic as FG Proposed CNG-Powered Vehicle Explode in Benin, Scores Injured

A tragic incident unfolded today at a NIPCO filling station in Benin City, Edo State, where a CNG (Compressed Natural Gas)-powered vehicle exploded, leaving scores of people injured.

The explosion, which occurred during refueling, caused chaos as witnesses scrambled to assist victims and flee the scene.

Videos circulating on social media captured the aftermath of the explosion, showing the vehicle reduced to debris, with thick smoke billowing from the area. Bystanders were seen frantically helping those wounded, as emergency services rushed to the scene.

Eyewitnesses confirmed that several injured individuals had been taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. The extent of the injuries is yet to be fully disclosed, though eyewitnesses described some of the injuries as severe.

The explosion has renewed concerns about the safety of CNG-powered vehicles, particularly in light of the Nigerian government’s recent push for citizens to convert petrol-powered vehicles to CNG.

This advocacy, part of a broader effort to reduce fuel costs and emissions, has raised questions about whether proper safety measures are being implemented as the country transitions to alternative fuels.
