2022: Commonwealth Day: Quality Education relevant to Developmental Needs

The Minister of state for Education, Hon. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba has noted that the educational sector is a key area in actualizing, realizing and promoting the started ideals of Commonwealth.

This was disclosed in the keynote address presented by the minister at the 2022 Commonwealth day held in Abuja on Monday.

Accordingly, the theme of ”Delivering a common future: Connecting, Innovating, Transforming” sets to redefine the core values and principles of Commonwealth which is achievable through innovation.

Meanwhile, Commonwealth as a mutual body stands to achieve its set goals for the benefits of the member states and the people of the Commonwealth.

The minister lauded the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari for drastically reducing the total number of out of school child’s from 10.1 million in 2019 to 6.9 million as of 2020.

He also stated that innovations like Better Education Service Delivery for All(BESDA) and The Adolescent Girls initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) has been implemented and this has aided the Federal government to be actively engaged in the Commonwealth activities and programmes.

Nwajiuba further revealed that the availability of trained professional teachers will also go a long way in sustaining quality and valid education.

Consequently, a number of professional examinations online for prospective diaspora teachers amongst others has evolved as a way of ensuring that quality teachers are still maintained in the education sector.

Similarly, the Director overseeing the office of the Permanent Secretary, Mr David Genre has hinted that peaceful coexistence, democracy and good governance can only be achieved if relevance is placed on quality education and developmental needs.

On this note, Gender implored all Nigerians to reinforce the unity it stands for, which according to him will help in fostering empathy for the vulnerable men and women, children in various parts of the country facing one crisis or the other, in guise of kidnapping, poverty, famine amongst others.

Also, the country Director of The Royal Commonwealth Society, Nigeria branch, Mr. Black son Olaseni Bayewumi who was represented by Mr. Charles Chimezie disclosed that unlike other international associations, the Commonwealth works on a consensus model stating that membership is voluntary.

According to him, the body comprises of 54 countries, all prioritizing values and principles of the Commonwealth.
