2023: Tinubu camp debunk claims over Obasanjo’s support for Peter Obi

The Election Campaign Organisation of Tinubu, has refuted claims that former President Olusegun Obasanjo is supporting the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi.

Recall that the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) alongside his running mate, Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, had met with Obasanjo on July 17.

Obasanjo alongside Obi met with Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and some governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in London.

The former President had also met with the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu and some of his allies at his Ota residence.

Speaking with The Punch, the spokesman of the Tinubu Campaign Organisation, Bayo Onanuga, stated that Obasanjo is not supporting any candidate.

Onanuga said all the presidential candidates have been visiting Obasanjo as an elder statesman to seek his blessing and not to solicit his support for the 2023 presidential election.

He said: “Obasanjo has said he is not supporting any candidate. So don’t put words in his mouth. As an elder statesman, all aspirants have been going to him to seek his blessing, not even support. Peter Obi went there, and Tinubu did the same thing.

“Before the presidential primary, Tinubu also went to see Ibrahim Babangida. This is what they all do. A few days back, Tinubu went to see Jonathan. They are elder statesmen who are now beyond partisan politics, and Obasanjo is not different. He has not endorsed any candidate because he is a father to everybody.”
