Police in Kogi State Begin Probe of Fire Incident at House of Assembly.

The Commissioner of Police in Kogi, CP Edward Egbuka, has commenced investigation to unravel the remote and immediate cause of the inferno that gutted the entire chambers and gallery of the Kogi State House Assembly on Monday.

The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO for the Police Command in the state,SP William Ovye Aya, in a statement in Lokoja on Monday, said that the investigation would be done in synergy with the Fire Service.

Aya said consequent upon the fire outbreak that razed down the Gallery and Chambers at the state Assembly, the Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Police Command led a team of tactical operatives on the spot assessment and ordered for a thorough investigation into the incident.

The investigation team, the PPRO said is led by Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).

The CP also deployed tactical teams to cordon-off the complex for preservation and to ensure adequate security,” Aya said.

Our Correspondent recalls that the Deputy Governor of the state, Chief Edward Onoja, who visited the Assembly, on the spot assessment, ruled out possibility of politics playing out in the incident.

He described the inferno as the first of its kind happening to state government owned institution, adding however that no document of the Assembly affected by the fire.

Onoja told Journalists in an interview that the security agencies were on top of the situation to unearth the circumstances that led to the incident.

Contributing, the Speaker of the Assembly, Mr Mathew Kolawole, said he suspected sabotage in the incident.

He, however, said the incident would not deter him from carrying out his legislative duty to the people of the state.

The fire was said to have occurred in the early morning of Monday and the cause remained unknown as at the time of this report.
