Some unidentified gunmen on Wednesday morning attacked and set ablaze the Divisional Police Headquarters in the Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The incident has created tension and perplexity in communities around the area.
It was gathered that the attackers in a large number invaded the police facility and started shooting sporadically, thereby scaring police officers on duty away, before setting the building on ablaze.
Meanwhile, the reason for the attack has not been ascertained nor was it clear if the attackers took away any police arms and ammunition.
Similarly, casualties of the incident have not been confirmed but it was gathered that the fire destroyed the building, property, and official documents.
Confirming the incident, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement said, “Our operatives in the early hours of today 28/12/2022 engaged some gunmen who attacked Ihiala police divisional headquarters and recovered one abandoned AK-47 rifle.
“The gunmen escaped the scene due to the superior fire of the police operatives, and no casualty was recorded.
“Unfortunately, the explosives the gunmen threw inside the police station building had already ignited a fire and affected the building.
“Operation is still ongoing in the area, further details shall be communicated.”
