Police Reacts Over Attack on Peter Obi’s Supporters in Lagos, Vows to Clamp Down on Attackers

The Lagos Command of the Nigerian Police Force has vowed to apprehend all those responsible for the attack on some Labour Party supporters in the state on Saturday.

A statement from the State Police Command spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin described the attack as reprehensible and regrettable.

Hundeyin added that a preliminary investigation into the attack has begun after it was reported by the Jakande Ward Chairman of the Labour Party.

Recall some supporters of the presidential candidate of the Labour Party were on Saturday attacked, beaten and harassed on their way to their campaign rally in Lagos.

Viral videos and photos that surfaced on social media captured some supporters donning the Labour party attire who were harassed and beaten by thugs with their vehicles destroyed in the process.

Some of the supporters had their clothing torn to shreds, while others sustained various degrees of injuries during the incident.

Reacting to the incident, the Lagos Police PRO revealed that the State Criminal Investigation Department will fully take over the investigation.

He added that the injured persons who have been given medical attention as well as other eyewitnesses are also helping the Police with their investigation.

The Police statement reads: “Jakande Ward Chairman of Labour Party commendably reported an attack on his party members at Ilasan Division. Four injured persons have been given medical attention. DPO Ilasan has commenced preliminary investigations while SCID is to fully take over investigations.

“The injured and other witnesses are assisting the Police with relevant information that would aid the apprehension and prosecution of the attackers.

“This attack is reprehensible! It is verifiable that the Command had stationed, since yesterday, patrol vehicles and officers at the Tafawa Balewa Square venue of today’s rally. We had already secured the venue to prevent any breakdown of law and order.

“The regrettable attack happened at about 15km away from the rally venue. As earlier stated, the SCID will take over investigations towards apprehending and prosecuting the attackers.”
