Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, were attacked in Kaduna State on Saturday.
The team were on election monitoring duty at School Road in Unguwan Rimi, when vote buyers and their supporters blocked them from arresting a suspect.
EFCC spokesperson Wilson Uwujaren said one Kabiru Musa was seen in a video allegedly inducing voters by using his phone to transfer money into their accounts.
By the time officers got to the location to pick him up, Musa became unruly and screamed to attract the attention of his “syndicate members.”
They descended on the operatives with different weapons, leaving some wounded but the team succeeded in taking Musa away.
Uwujaren added that as the vehicle carrying the suspect made its way out of the scene, it was pelted with stones and other objects that damaged the windshield.
The injured personnel are at the Medical Centre of the Kaduna Zonal Command receiving treatment, while the suspect is in custody, pending conclusion of the investigation.
EFCC teams were similarly attacked during the presidential and National Assembly elections in February. Some of the commission’s vehicles were badly damaged.
