Police nab two fraudsters using Kano First Lady’s name to extort people

The Kano State Police Command has arrested two suspects for offences of violation of National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) code, criminal conspiracy, giving false information, injurious falsehood and extortion.

Spokesperson of the command, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa Haruna, who disclosed this in a statement said the suspects, Umar Adamu and Hussaini Musa, allegedly used the name of Governor Abba Yusuf’s wife, to extort money from people.

According to the PPRO, the suspects aired a public announcement, asking members of the public to pay the sum of N3,000 each for a training that will be sponsored by a well known NGO in collaboration with the Governor’s wife.

“The Commissioner of Police, Kano State Police Command held meeting with members of Kano State Tiktokers Group on Wednesday, 12th July 2023 where he made categorical clear statement that the Police Command have the capacity to detect crime committed on the web,” the statement read.

“Yesterday 13/07/2023 one Umar Adamu, ‘m’, aged 23 years old resident of Yankaba Quarters Kano and Hussaini Musa, ‘m’, aged 33 years old, resident of Danladi Nasidi Quarters Kano are now cooling their heels at the CID, Bompai Police Command Headquarters Kano for complicity by airing unverified Public Announcement purported credited to her Excellency, the wife of the Executive Governor of Kano State.

The Audio says: “I greet you the good people of Kano State. A known World Empowerment Organization in collaboration with the Wife of the Kano State Governor will sponsor the training of two thousand (2000) people in catering like Pizza, Shawarma, Burger, Eggroll, Samosa, etc. And the two have taken responsibility for the registration fees of all the participants. In addition, there will be provision of empowerment for all after completion of the training. But then, each of the participants will pay only three thousand naira (N3,000:00) for the Form and I’D Card. As of now, the sale of the forms is in progress. Arewa Special Shawarma and Multi Special Training Centre will spearhead the training. “Currently, Police Investigation is in progress to establish the culpability or otherwise of the conspirators, their sponsors and the gross violation of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) Code against the Media House including the staff that aired the public announcement without balancing the story which led to the extortion of money from over fifty (50) people, so far

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel, FIPMA, psc therefore cautions residents to be wary of fraudsters that use the Media for extortion. He also advised Media Houses to always scrutinize the authenticity of adverts before airing.
