Just In: Niger President, Mohamed Bazoum ‘Detained By Guards’

Members of the Presidential Guard have detained the President of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum.

A source close to Bazoum on Wednesday disclosed that the decision of the guard is coming on the heels of the ‘ultimatum’ given to the President by the army.

Raye24reporters had earlier reported that the guard sealed off access to the president’s residence and offices.

There are indications that there was no special deployment of military or gunfire incidents at the reported spots, but Bazoum’s official home and offices in the presidential complex in Niamey were sealed off on Wednesday morning.

However, after talk broke down between the army and President Bazoum the guards “refused to release the President,” the source said.

The source further stated, “The army has given them an ultimatum.”

Bazoum was democratically elected in 2021, taking the helm of one of Africa’s poorest and most coup-prone countries.
