Rivers House of Assembly Allegedly Set on Fire Over Impeachment Threat Against Governor Fubara

There is tension in PortHarcourt, the River state capital as the House of Assembly has been burnt down in a strange inferno that happened late Sunday.

Hoodlums had invaded the complex at about 9:45pm which is a stone throw to the Headquarters of the Police command in the state.

Before the hoodlums were dislodged, the hoodlums had set the main chamber of the Assembly complex on fire.

It was also gathered that the hoodlums had used hand grenades to cause an explosion in the building before the fire started. This claim could not be independently verified.

Emergency official including men of the fire service who battled to put out the fire could not save the whole complex as the main chamber had been burnt.

It was learnt that the action of the political thugs could not be unconnected with the impeachment move against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Leader of the House of Asssembly, Edison Ehie.

After the fire was put out, the complex was taken over by armed men including policemen and some soldiers.

Sunday’s late night inferno was said to be the peak of the ‘war’ between former Governor Nyesom Wike, who is currently serving as the Minister of the FCT and Governor Fubara, his protege.

Wike had ensured the election of Fubara in the March 2023 election in the state.

There have been allegations that since Wike left, he has remained at the commanding height of the state affairs.

Politicians loyal to Fubara are said to have urged Fubara to assert himself as the Chief Executive of the state.
