The National Youth Leader of African Democratic Congress, Barr. Maurice Ebam, has joined notable personalities across the world to celebrate Women on the occasion of this year’s International Women’s Day.
Barr. Ebam stated that women make up half of the world population and at the same time raise up the other half.
“We must realise that women are not some type of property or a game to be gambled with but sadly women have become endangered species.
“As the world marks International Women’s Day, we as Nigerians and Africans must purge ourselves of self patriarchal delusions and understand that we are created equally irrespective of gender,” he said.
Speaking on the future of Nigeria and Africa, the youth leader said, “the future of Nigeria and Africa is unapologetically feminine for our nation’s growth is tied down to how we treat our women. Gender inequality and poverty prevent women from developing their potentials.”
Barr. Ebam who also doubles as the Interim Chairman, Forum of National Youth Leaders of Political Parties in Nigeria, enjoined men to give room for equality of gender.
“As men we need to tap into our masculinity to protect women by shaping our attitude towards gender equality in Africa especially Nigeria.
“Culture, traditions and religion should never be an excuse for violence against women. This is not going to be an easy journey but we need to make conscious efforts.”
He expressed sad on the high level of violence meted out to women.
“As a Nigerian and African youth, I am highly concerned about violence and discrimination against women which is the most commonest form of domestic violence and Human Rights abuse in Nigeria, Africa and the world.
The youth leader reiterated his stance as an African to engage men in reducing domestic violence against women.
“The role women play cannot be under valued and to properly maximise Nigeria and Africa’s opportunities and potentials, women and youths must be at the forefront. ADC has given women, youths and persons with disability priority with 35 percent youth inclusion in politics. Come join ADC,” he mentioned.
