Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has congratulated Keir Starmer, the new United Kingdom Prime Minister.
Atiku Abubakar described Labour Party’s victory, during Thursday’s election that ended 14 years of Conservatives Party rule in Britain, as a testament to the virility of democracy.
The former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said democracy remained a functional system for a common cause.
“The victory of the Labour Party in the United Kingdom election is another testament to the virility of democracy as a functional system for a common cause.
“I congratulate the Prime Minister of the UK, Sir Keir Starmer, Keir Starmer,” Atiku said in a statement on Friday.
He added that the people of the United Kingdom made a choice they deemed to be in their best interest.
“More importantly, I congratulate the people of the United Kingdom for making a choice of leadership that is deemed to be in the interest of the majority of the people,” he said.
Meanwhile, former Prime Minister, David Cameron, said Rishi Sunak, the immediate former UK prime minister, governed with decency.
Cameron stated that the a change of Prime Minister and government remained hugely significant for Britain. He wished success to Keir Starmer.
“The change of Prime Minister and government is always a hugely significant moment for our country.
“I pay tribute to Rishi Sunak for his leadership, decency and the grace in which he left office today. I wish him and his family well.
“My thoughts are also with our new Prime Minister, Keir Starmer. His success will be our success, so as he starts his work and solemn duties in No10, I send him my very best wishes,” Cameron said on Friday.
