A family of five luckily escaped death when a boy’s quarter building at 49 Oyinlola Street, off Adelabu Bus Stop, Iyana-Ipaja, area of Lagos State they were occupying suddenly collapsed.
The incident, according to reports happened on Saturday night, at about 10 pm.
The boys’ quarters was attached to build a storey-building at the above-mentioned collapse location.
“Fortunately, the single family involved was able to escape before the collapse.
“There were no casualties nor fatalities involved in the incident,” Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Authority, LASTMA, Dr. Femí Oke-Osanyitolu confirmed.
According to Oke-Osanyitolu, LASEMA emergency responders upon arrival at the scene, investigations revealed that the boys’ quarter of the said storey-building self-collapsed as a result of neglect and poor maintenance.
Meanwhile, as of press time, the main building which consists of nine rooms downstairs and two flats upstairs, has been cordoned off.
The emergency responders subsequently gave public enlightenment, awareness and knowledge on the inherent and real dangers to occupants of the building on their continuous stay there.
“All occupants have been advised to evacuate the building immediately for the safety of their lives and properties,” Oke-Osanyitolu stated.
Meanwhile, as location of the self-collapsed boys’ quarters could not be access manual demolition of it’s remnants has commenced.
Also, the integrity tests by Material Testing Laboratory has also been recommended for the main building, to determine its continued existence, Oke-Osanyitolu told newsmen.
