Gwaram, Basirka Communities Protest Over Closure of Bridges

Hundred of protesters from Gwaram and Basirka communities stormed Gwaram bridge forcing passenger to make a u-turn, while several others walked on foot

A situation where security forces where used to dispatch the angry protester from the main bridge that was barricaded with woods and Stone, which has disrupt motorists.

When contacted the Jigawa state government officials said the state government has announced the closure of Gwaram and Basirka Bridge for major repairs urging motorist to use other alternative route.

The state commissioner of works and transport Hon Aminu Usman Gumel, revealed this while speaking to newsmen in Dutse.

The commissioner who spoke through the Permanent Secretary of the ministry Engineer. Datti Ahmad said, the two bridges were damaged by flooding last year and after engineering assessment the state government have now resolved to close down the bridges for work to commence.

He explained that,  light trucks and busses can pass on the bridges but heavy trucks will be restricted to avoid total collapse and also for motorists safety before the work commences

The commissioner also advised motorists to use other alternative road for their movement of goods and services.

However reports from the area revealed that, the Gwaram community and other motorists plying the road were seen on Friday protesting against the restriction imposed on the bridges by the state government.

According to one of the protesters Baban Fati Driver said, they demonstrated to call on the attention of government to provide them with alternative road close to the bridges.

Adding that the price of good is now high the cube for ten naira is now twenty naira every thing is now double because for the past three days business, have stood still in the area explained further that a litre of fuel in gwaram is now 230 naira because heavy trucks were not allowed to cross the bridge.
