I wasn’t endorsed by President Buhari as APC national chairman – Adamu

Senator Abdullahi Adamu, former Governor of Nasarawa State, has denied reports of being endorsed by President Muhammadu Buhari as the consensus candidate for the national chairmanship position of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The president reportedly endorsed Adamu in a meeting with governors elected on the platform of the ruling party at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

After the meeting, it was said that some governors rejected the endorsement of the former governor as the next party chairman, saying that his performance as the chairman of the APC reconciliation committee was also not encouraging to give him the mandate.

The governor claimed that Adamu is not a core member of the party, saying someone who knows the ins and outs of the party should be the one to head the party and not a former member of PDP.

Some APC chairmanship aspirants have also rejected the endorsement of the Senator as the consensus candidate ahead of the party’s national convention.

Reacting to the reported endorsement, Senator Adamu said he is not aware of any plan to make him the consensus candidate for the APC national chairmanship position.

He made the clarification in Keffi while he was playing host to officials of the party at the Local Government level at his Keffi country home, on Saturday.

A source who was at the meeting told Tribune that Buhari has not endorsed him, asking party members to disregard the media reports.

The source said the Senator representing Nasarawa West Senatorial District asked his supporters to pray for his successful emergence as the next national chairman of the party.

He also asked party officials in the state to mobilise at least 100 persons from each electoral ward that will accompany him to the national convention slated for March 26.

The source said: “Senator Adamu told those at the meeting that President Buhari has not endorsed any candidate for the position of the national chairman.

“Instead, Senator Adamu requested for the party officials to pray for his successful emergence as the next national chairman of the APC.”
