On Thursday in Osogbo, the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osun State denied media reports that its Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, stated that there was overvoting in the state’s election for governor on July 16, 2022.
Mr. Adewale Francis, head of the office’s Department of Voter Education, Publicity, and Inclusivity, stated that the overvoting statement attributed to Agboke was false and malicious.
“The Osun State office of INEC has been made aware of media reports claiming that the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, stated that there was excessive voting during the election.
“The report is false and malicious.
“Only when he met with the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba AbdulRasheed Akanbi, did the REC explain the effectiveness of the Biomodal Voters Accreditation System as a voter accreditation device.
“Any counterexamples are extraneous to the context of the statement and should be disregarded.
“We urge the media to always verify their information sources prior to publication,” he stated.
On Tuesday, Dr. Agboke visited Oba Akanbi in Iwo, where he explained the operation of the BVAS machines.
Some media outlets, however, reported that he said the BVAS machines were used or manipulated by INEC staff and politicians to commit overvoting in the Osun governorship election.
On January 27, a tribunal led by Justice Terste Kume nullified the election of Peoples Democratic Party Governor, Ademola Adeleke.
It declared Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress to be the actual election victor.
It was also reported that there were overvoting in ten of the state’s thirty local government areas during the election.
