The trial of the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu resumed on Wednesday, February 16th, 2022 at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Mr. Kanu appeared in court wearing his regular Fendi outfit – a clear violation of the order made by Justice Binta Nyako during his hearing in December 2021. Back then, the judge asked that he be allowed to change his outfit before his next appearance in court.
Counsel to the IPOB leader, Mike Ozekhome complained to the court that the DSS has refused to allow Mr. Kanu a change of clothes. Mr. Ozekhome added that Mr. Kanu’s younger brother has been refused access to the DSS the facility where he was detained on three occasions.
The DSS has explained to court why Nnamdi Kanu has still not changed his clothes.
The security agency said Kanu can’t wear clothes with a lion’s head but the IPOB leader insisted that’s the type of clothes he prefers to wear.
“My Lord, clothes that were brought for the defendant had lion’s head embroiled on them, and the defendant (Mr Kanu) can’t wear clothes with a lion’s head.” – DSS’s director of legal services said.
During today’s trial Kanu’s Lead Counsel, Mike Ozekhome (SAN) argued on Wednesday that his client, Kanu, was extraordinarily renditioned. He said offences allegedly committed by Kanu has no basis, adding that where and when they committed were not stated in the charges.

Human rights lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome(SAN), who is the lead counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, on Wednesday, raised the alarm that his client’s sight had deteriorated.

On the issue of Kanu’s sight, Ozekhome said: “My lord, since 2015, his glasses were taken from him.
“The one he wore before his extraordinary rendition from Kenya was also taken from him.
“Till now, he does not have glasses to wear and his sight is deteriorating.
“My Lord we do not want the Defendant to go blind, that is why we have decided to bring it to the attention of the court.”
Replying Binta Nyako said she will look into it and then adjourned the case till April 8.
