Minimum Wage: NYSC Speaks on ₦70,000 Payment to Corps Members

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) management has responded to claims circulating on social media that it directed corps members to upgrade their bank accounts in anticipation of receiving the newly approved ₦70,000 minimum wage.

Social media reports suggested that corps members were advised to upgrade their bank accounts, which are allegedly categorized as Student Accounts with deposit limits of ₦50,000 and savings caps of ₦300.

The NYSC has denied issuing any such directive, emphasizing that no official instructions have been given regarding the upgrade of accounts to accommodate the new minimum wage.

In a statement released by the Director of Information and Public Relations at NYSC, Eddy Megwa, the organization labeled the report as misleading and unfounded.

The NYSC clarified that it has not received any official directive to begin paying corps members a ₦70,000 minimum wage or to upgrade their accounts in preparation for such payments.

The NYSC emphasized that neither corps members nor the public should believe these rumors, as no instructions have been issued by the government department responsible for wage matters. Therefore, it is impossible for the NYSC to communicate any information on this issue.

Megwa, said: “Management has been drawn to a misleading information circulating in the media regarding payment of ₦70, 000 minimum wage to Corps Members and the directive to upgrade their accounts.

“This is absolute falsehood which is far from the truth. Corps Members, parents and members of the public should note that no directive has been received from the relevant sector of government responsible for wages matters.

“It is therefore impossible for the NYSC to issue any information on such. Corps Members already know the approved channel and mode of communication in the Scheme and should therefore ignore the directive accordingly.

“The NYSC by this release therefore admonishes Corps Members to desist from allowing mischief makers who are set to mislead Nigerians from continuing to play on their intelligence.

“Bloggers and social media influencers are warned to stop issusing statements that concern the management of National Youth Service Corps without authorization.”
