A woman identified simply as Oyinlola has demaded for divorce from her husband, Adeyi, at Grade A Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State on the grounds of irresponsibility, neglect and constant fight.
Oyinlola stated that Adeyi did not let her have rest of mind since she got married to him.
She explained that her husband always found fault in all that she did and would end up fighting her.
The plaintiff added that the defendant neglected her and their children and refused to be committed to their welfare.
Oyinlola said that Adeyi remained indifferent to the plight of their children despite her complaints, which made her take up the challenge of meeting their needs.
She told the court that he forced her to abort their last pregnancy and that she moved out of his house after he made life unbearable for her.
Adeyi, who acceded to divorce, denied the allegations brought against him, stating that his marriage to Oyinlola did not work because she was promiscuous.
The defendant stated that he caught the plaintiff with her lover and that she promised to stop the illicit affair after he reported her to her family, but that she still continued with the relationship.
Adeyi stated that Oyinlola walked out of their marriage because she was impregnated by her lover while she was still living under his roof.
Oyinlola, in her testimony, said: “My marriage to my husband was a turbulent one.
“He refused that I had peace of mind, and we were always at loggerheads.
“My husband refused to be committed to his responsibilities towards me and our children.
“I labour to make up for his inadequacies in the home, most especially the neglect of our children, but he still sought excuses to fight me.
“He was never satisfied with all that I did and would always complain.
“He always accused me of infidelity, despite having five children for him and no bustard was found among them.
“He insisted I aborted our last pregnancy, which did not go down well with me.
“I later gave in to his demand so that peace could reign.
“Unfortunately, our relationship experienced more strain as a result of the disaffection between us.
“I decided to move out of his house because he subjected my life to pain.
“He has been indifferent to our children’s welfare.
“I pray this honourable court to grant me custody of our children, but make my husband responsible for their upkeep.”
Adeyi in his response said: “My lord, I agree to divorce, but I want the court to know that all that my wife said concerning me are lies.
“We started our relationship on a good note, but she started misbehaving and went into an affair with another man.
“I caught her and her lover red-handed, and I reported her to her parents, who pleaded on her behalf.
“She promised to stop the illicit affair but did not.
“I hid all her atrocities from our children so that she would not lose their love and respect.
“It is true she had five children for me, but only the doctor can confirm that none of them is a bastard.
“My lord, I insisted she aborted her last pregnancy because I was not around when she took in.
“My wife did the unpardonable when she was impregnated by her lover while still living under my roof.
“I was unaware of this until she had moved out of my house.
The court president, Mrs S.M Akintayo, adjourned the case until November 5.
