Nigerian Chi Onwurah Wins Newcastle Seat in British Election

A Nigerian-British, Chi Onwurah, has secured the highest number of votes to return to the British parliament after Thursday’s United Kingdom’s general election.

Chinyelu Susan Onwurah was elected into the British House of Commons, under the Labour Party umbrella, first in 2010. She represented Newscastle upon Tyne Central.

In 2024 election, held Thursday, Chi Onwurah was re-elected to represent Newcastle upon Tyne Central and West.

The Co-Chairman of All Party Parliamentary Group for Africa (APPG for Africa) and a member of Royal African Society, Onwurah, in a message, thanked her constituents for their support and the Labour Party.

While Chi secured 18,875 votes, her closest rival Ashton Muncaster of Reform Party secured 7,815 votes. Conservatives Party candidate, Frances Lasok secured 4,228 votes

Chi promised quality representation, assuring her constituents, on her X handle “I will not let you down“.

“Thank you from the Labour team to everyone in Newcastle Central and West for putting your confidence in Labour and electing me as your Member of Parliament. We will not let you down!” Onwurah wrote.

Former Treasurer World Bank, Arunma Ote, in a felicitation message to Chi Onwurah, on her X handle wrote, “⁦Chi Onwurah candidate for Newcastle Upon Tyne elected and retained her seat. A hearty congratulations to Co-Chair ⁦APPG for Africa.”

According to Wikipedia, “Onwurah’s mother was from Newcastle. Her father, from Nigeria, was working as a dentist while he studied at Newcastle University Medical School when they met and married in the 1950s.

“Onwurah was born on 12 April 1965 in Wallsend, then in Northumberland. While she was still in her infancy the family moved to Awka, Nigeria in 1965. Just two years later the Biafra War broke out, bringing famine with it, forcing her mother to bring the children back to Tyneside, while her father stayed there in the Biafran army.

“Onwurah attended Kenton School in Newcastle and graduated from Imperial College London in 1987 with a degree in electrical engineering.

“She worked in hardware and software development, product management, market development and strategy for a variety of mainly private sector companies in a number of different countries – the UK, France, the United States.”
