Reactions as CBN Says it Doesn’t Know Quantity of New Naira Notes Printed

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) caused a stir on Thursday with the declaration that it doesn’t know the volume or amount of new naira notes printed.

The CBN Deputy Governor in charge of Financial Stability, Aisha Ahmad who represented the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele said this when she appeared before members of the House of Representatives.

Raye24reporters, reports that the lawmakers had summoned the CBN to explain the poor circulation of the new naira notes which were officially released on December 15, 2022.

She was also expected to brief the House on the apex bank’s cashless policy and cash withdrawal limits.

But fielding questions from the lawmakers, Ahmad declared the apex bank is not aware of the number of newly printed naira notes.

A lawmaker, Sada Soli during the House session had lamented the non-availability of the new notes to the public days after it was launched and asked Ahmad to disclose the quantities of new notes printed.

But responding to the question, the CBN deputy governor said she does not know the quantities of notes printed by the apex bank.

She added that she doesn’t know the exact amount and the number of notes printed and doesn’t want to give a wrong figure.

She also failed to answer the question on how much was spent on producing the re-designed naira notes.

Her submission caused a rowdy session among the lawmaker in the Green Chamber of the House.

The apex had recently introduced new N100, N200, N500, and N1,000 notes.
