The Jigawa State Government says it has disbursed N59,317,700 million to engage student on extra coaching classes 122,477 who registered for Senior Schools Certificate Examinations (SSCE) in the state.
Dr Abbas Abubakar, the Executive Secretary, Agency for Mass Education, stated this during a briefing to facilitators, coordinators and monitoring team of the 2022 Extra Coaching classes of the final year students in the state.
Abubakar, said the exercise titled “Extra coaching for SSCE final year student in Mathematics and English”, would be conducted by the agency.
He explained that the exercise was initiated by the state government in 2019 to enable the students pass their Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) with good grades.
The executive secretary added that the extra coaching classes would be conducted two months before the commence of the SSCE by both West African Examination Council (WAEC) and National Examination Council (NECO).
“It is important to note that this special extra coaching of SS 3 final year students in Mathematics and English language across the senior schools in the state was initiated by Gov. Muhammad Badaru in 2019.
“You may wish to be informed that the first extra coaching was approved and successful conducted in March 2019. At the end of the program, a comprehensive report, which entailed strength, weaknesses, and way forward, was present to the governor.
“And after deliberations, comments and commendations by the governor, he directed that henceforth, the program be an annual exercise. Indeed since then, the years 2019, 2020 and 2021 extra coaching were approved and successfully conducted.
“Therefore, today marked the beginning of the forth extra coaching in favour of SS 3 final year students with a view and prayer that the Jigawa students will get the required credits for admission into universities, including Mathematics and English language in their final year examinations,” he said.
The executive secretary pointed out that the gesture has greatly improved the students’ performance, especially in the two core subjects, which has enabled majority of them to gain admission into various universities and other tertiary institutions.
“It will not be out of place to intimate this gathering that a total of 122,477 final year students from 2019 to 2022 benefited from this coaching, while the sum of N59,317,700 was approved and released by the state government.
This has greatly improved students’ performance especially in English language and Mathematics. Indeed, this has enabled majority of students to gain admission in to universities and tertiary institutions in the country,” the executive secretary added.
According to him, the briefing was to inform, guide, assist and remind stakeholders in the extra coaching on the confidence reposed on them to do what is expected of them.
Abubakar added that it was also to groom the facilitators on strategies and modern techniques towards achieving better performance among the students, especially in English language and Mathematics.
“I’m using this opportunity to kindly request the facilitators, coordinators and the monitoring team to please be committed and ensure professionalism in undertaking this assignment.
“I wish to also thank Gov. Badaru for his concern towards reactivation and revitalising of education sector in the state,” Abubakar said.
While declaring the briefing open, the Commissioner for Education in the state, Dr Lawan Yunusa, said the state government initiated the program as a result of analysis made in WAEC and NECO examinations from 1992 to 2018, which indicated serious weakness by the students.
Yunusa, who was represented by Hajiya Sadiya Muhammd, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, noted that this has resulted to the inability of the students to gain admission into tertiary institutions due to lack of minimum requirements.
He said the state government therefore directed the agency to embark on the extra coaching of the final year students of public secondary schools.
