In a rare medical marvel, a baby born in Hong Kong arrived in the world carrying her own siblings within her tiny body, shocking doctors and defying the odds.
The condition, known as fetus-in-fetu, is an extremely rare occurrence, happening in only about 1 in every 500,000 births, leaving medical experts baffled.
Described as one of medicine’s mysteries, the infant was found to have two tiny fetuses nestled between her liver and kidney during surgery at just three weeks old. Each fetus had its own umbilical cord, suggesting they were once part of a triplet pregnancy, but for unknown reasons, were absorbed into the surviving baby’s body.
The phenomenon, akin to vanishing twin syndrome, where one twin is absorbed into the other during pregnancy, has only been reported in about 200 cases worldwide. The incredible discovery highlights the complexities of human development and the mysteries that still puzzle the medical community.
