According to a prison official at the Kuje Correctional Center, Abuja, over 150 terrorists were freed on Tuesday night after the heavy attack that is ongoing as at the time of filing this report.
In a series of WhatsApp messages shared with raye24reporters the source said, “All terrorist in the prison have been rescued.
“All the major, biggest terrorist, armed robbers and kidnapper have escaped.”
He added that, “Terrorist ordered everybody to escaped. Some terrorists asked of (name withheld) that they want to kill him in the crowd, but they were told he had escaped too.
“….and his men refused to escape.
They remained behind, that they are not criminals.
“The Prison door is still open. People are still escaping.
“No reinforcement came, 2 hours after attack.
“Nobody came for assistance.
Kuje correctional center completely taken over and all criminals and terrorists have escaped,” he said in the chat.
A source confirmed to our Correspondent, said that the first explosion, which she said was likely a high capacity bomb, went off around 10.25pm.
She further confirmed that soon after the second and third blasts went off, sporadic gunshots followed.
It was gathered that there was a security report, which alerted the prison officials that the center which is a Medium Prison would be attacked.
Attempts to speak with the Public Relations Officer of the prison, Francis Enobore, proved abortive as his phone rang out unanswered.
But a source in the prison said the attack was carried out from the back of the building and is still going on as of press time.
“The attack is still going on as we speak and the inmates are escaping. I can’t report any casualty but I can confirm some inmates are leaving because the back is now open and exposed.”
