All political appointees in Enugu State have been reportedly directed to fulfill their mandate of winning their various polling units for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the governorship and state assembly polls or forget their salaries and allowances.
Raye24reporters gathered that the directive was contained in a memo dated February 28, 2023, with Ref: OSLG/EC/PA/002, and titled “Cessation of salaries and other allowances.”
A copy of the said memo which was sighted by SaharaReporters on Friday revealed that the Enugu State governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi had allegedly directed all political appointees to win their polling units at tomorrow’s election or forfeit their salaries and allowances.
The memo was allegedly copied to the HPM, Treasurer, and Payroll Officer.
Speculations are that the said memo which was signed by the Executive Chairman of Igbo-Etiti local government, Donatus C. Ugwu was issued after the governor lost his bid to represent Enugu North Senatorial District in the National Assembly and also after the defeat of the PDP in most areas of the state.
This online news platform also gathered that the state government after the defeat of the presidential and national assembly election announced the suspension of salaries and allowances of workers and political appointees till after the governorship polls while threatening appointees that failed to deliver their polling units for PDP attracts forfeiture of their salaries and allowances.
Raye24reporters learned that as a way to push them to do everything to ensure PDP’s victory in Saturday’s elections, the cessation of salaries and allowances was effected in the 17 local government areas and Ugwuanyi’s appointees at the state level.
The memo reads: “Government of Enugu State of Nigeria, Office of the secretary Igbo-Etiti local government area.
“Be informed that salaries and allowances of all Political appointees of the local government council have been put on hold until after the elections.
“All concerned (political appointees) are to deliver on their political mandates in their various polling units, etc. to the PDP in the elections with evidence thereafter after which the restrictions on salaries and other allowances will be lifted if need be.”
